A good lake house housewarming gift is small, useful and tied to the place. Bring something for the first night, something for the porch or dock, or something with their lake on it. They're still unpacking, so pick one thing they'll use in the first week, not one more thing to find a spot for.
How to choose
Visiting soon? Bring something for tonight. Won't see them for a month? Send something for the wall or the couch, so it's waiting when they settle in.
A gift with their lake on it works when you know the water, and the bay. If they bought on Lake Winnipesaukee, our outline shows Alton Bay, Meredith Bay, Wolfeboro Bay and Paugus Bay, so they can point to theirs. Find theirs on our list of lakes first, then pick the thing.
In the lists below, the pieces from Lake Swag are marked. Everything else you can pick up on the drive there.
Bring it on the day
- Something for the first night. Sparkling water, a bottle of wine or a pie. Add a bottle opener, since theirs is in a box somewhere.
- Firewood and fire starters. The first fire in a new place is worth planning for.
- Bug spray and citronella. For the porch after sunset.
- A first-aid kit. Keep it by the dock door or in the boat, wherever the scraped knees happen.
For the porch and dock
- An outdoor lake flag (Lake Swag). Hemmed polyester with a rod pocket, 12 × 18 or 24 × 36 inches, from $24.99. Pole not included. The 12 × 18 garden flag for the yard is $19.99. Flags and decor.
- Outdoor string lights. For the dock posts or the porch rail.
- A coir doormat. It handles wet feet and sandy ones.
- Chair cushions in an outdoor fabric. For the dock chairs and the porch swing.
- A bird feeder and a field guide to the area's birds. Hang it where the kitchen window looks out.
For the kitchen and table
- A set of four coasters (Lake Swag). A new table needs them the first week. Cork back, 3.75 inches square, $29.99. Coasters.
- Lake mugs for the porch (Lake Swag). One lake printed large on glossy white ceramic, 11 or 15 oz, dishwasher safe. From $19.99. Two is a nice start. Lake mugs.
- A wood serving board. For the cheese and crackers that come out when the boat gets back.
- A glass pitcher. Sweet tea or lemonade on the porch table.
- A good cooler bag. For the walk down to the dock with lunch.
For the walls and the couch
- A lake map print (Lake Swag). Matte archival paper, set upright or wide to fit the lake. Every size from 11 × 14 to 24 × 36 inches fits a standard frame (frame not included). From $22.99. Prints.
- A guest book for the entry table. By next summer it holds a record of who came.
- A lake blanket (Lake Swag). Velveteen plush in navy or white, from $34.99. Blankets.
- A deck of cards and a board game. For the rainy afternoon that cancels the boat.
- A framed photo of the house from the water. Take it from a friend's boat the first summer. Nobody else has that picture.
If the house closed this fall
The first Christmas at a lake house needs something on the tree. A lake ornament (Lake Swag) comes in clear crystal with the lake engraved ($29.99) or glossy ceramic with the lake printed in black ($19.99), and both ship free. Every lake on the site has both, on the lake ornaments page, and the family name and year go on free.
What to skip
- Furniture and rugs. They already chose those.
- Strongly scented candles. Taste varies, and the lake smells like itself.
- Fragile glass you have to carry down to the dock.
- Art that has to match their paint. A map of their own lake is easier to place than a painting.
For the host who rents it out
If the house is a short-term rental, buy for the guests who'll use it. Things that stay in the house and survive a week of strangers work best.
- Mugs and coasters (Lake Swag). The mug goes in the dishwasher and the coasters have a cork back.
- A map print of their lake (Lake Swag). Guests ask where they are on the lake. The print answers it.
- A printed house guide. The Wi-Fi, trash day, where the life jackets live and the rules for the dock.
- Extra dock towels in one color. Easy to tell from the bath towels, easy to count at checkout.
- A key lockbox. For late arrivals and early departures.
One caution: our pint glass is $29.99 and hand wash only, so skip it if the turnover cleaning runs on a dishwasher.

Questions people ask
What should I bring to a lake house housewarming?
Bring one useful thing. If you're visiting this weekend, bring something for tonight: firewood, a pie or a cold six-pack of sparkling water. If you're sending a gift, pick something for the porch, the kitchen or the wall, ideally with their lake on it, since that's the one thing the last owners didn't leave behind.
Can I put the family name or a year on a lake house gift?
Yes, on any lake. Ornaments take a name and year free, right on the product page. For anything else, or a lake we haven't drawn yet, ask for a free mockup at lakeswag.com/pages/suggest-a-lake with the lake, the product and the words. We email it within 24 hours, and nothing is made until you approve it.
How early should I order a lake house housewarming gift?
Most Lake Swag pieces are made in 2 to 5 business days, and posters take 3 to 8. They then arrive 3 to 7 business days after they ship. Those are estimates, not guarantees, and November and December can add time, so order at least three weeks ahead in the holidays.
What size is the lake map poster, and does it need a special frame?
The poster comes in 11 x 14, 16 x 20, 18 x 24 and 24 x 36 inches, on matte archival paper, set upright or wide to fit the lake. Every size fits a standard frame, so any store frame in that size works. The frame is not included.
