About Lac Courte Oreilles
Lac Courte Oreilles is in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, about 8.5 miles southeast of Hayward, and around Hayward people call it LCO. The lake is about 6 miles long, up to 90 feet deep and around 5,000 acres, with 25.4 miles of shoreline. French traders called it Courte Oreilles, “short ears,” and the Ojibwe name, Odaawaa-zaaga’iganiing, means “Odawa Lake.” The eastern part of the lake lies within the Lac Courte Oreilles Indian Reservation. The water is clear and spring-fed with plenty of weed beds, and anglers fish it for muskie, northern pike, walleye, bass and panfish.
