About Candlewood Lake

Candlewood Lake is Connecticut’s largest lake, spread across Fairfield and Litchfield counties in the western part of the state, with shoreline in Danbury, Brookfield, New Fairfield, New Milford and Sherman. Connecticut Light and Power built it as a pumped-storage reservoir on the Housatonic River, starting to fill it in 1928 and flooding the village of Jerusalem. The lake covers about 5,420 acres, runs about 11 miles long and up to 2 miles wide, and reaches about 90 feet deep. It has 12 islands, and Chicken Rock, a 25-foot jumping rock, is a favorite swimming spot.
