About Squam Lake

Squam Lake is in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, reaching into Grafton, Carroll and Belknap counties, with Holderness, Sandwich, Moultonborough and Center Harbor on its shore. It covers about 6,800 acres, reaches 99 feet at its deepest, and is the second-largest lake entirely in New Hampshire. A short channel leads to Little Squam Lake, and the Squam River carries the water on to the Pemigewasset River at Ashland. On Golden Pond was filmed here in 1981. Common loons nest on the lake, and the Loon Preservation Committee and the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center run loon cruises out of Holderness in summer.
