About Nickajack Lake
Nickajack Lake is the TVA reservoir on the Tennessee River that runs 46 miles from Nickajack Dam up to Chickamauga Dam, passing through Chattanooga. Nickajack Dam was finished in 1967, replacing the leaky Hales Bar Dam from 1913. The lake takes in the Tennessee River Gorge, known as the Grand Canyon of Tennessee. Below the dam are boat ramps and a fishing pier, and gray bats pour out of Nickajack Cave at dusk from late April to early October.
