About Lake Vermilion

Lake Vermilion is in St. Louis County in Minnesota’s Arrowhead, with Tower on the south shore and Cook to the west. It covers about 39,000 acres with more than 365 islands and reaches 76 feet at its deepest. The Ojibwe name, Onamanii-zaaga’iganiing, describes the evening sun tinting the water red, and French traders rendered it Vermilion. On the south shore near Tower, Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park takes visitors down into Minnesota’s oldest iron mine, opened in 1882, and includes the Stuntz Bay Boathouse Historic District. Walleye and muskie are the fish most people come for.
