About Lake Champlain
Lake Champlain lies mostly between New York and Vermont and reaches north into Quebec, where it drains through the Richelieu River to the St. Lawrence. The Lake Champlain Basin Program lists about 120 miles in length, up to 12 miles wide, about 455 square miles of water and a deepest point of 400 feet between Charlotte, Vermont and Essex, New York. Burlington, Vermont, and Plattsburgh, New York, are the largest settlements on the shore. More than 70 islands include Grand Isle, North Hero and Isle La Motte, all in Grand Isle County, Vermont. Cumberland Bay State Park in Plattsburgh has a large natural sand beach, and the Champlain Canal links the lake to the Hudson River.
