About Chautauqua Lake

Chautauqua Lake lies entirely within Chautauqua County, New York, about 17 miles long and 2 miles wide at its widest. Mayville is at the north end and Jamestown at the south end, where the Chadakoin River carries the water out toward the Allegheny and Ohio rivers. The New York State DEC lists 13,156 acres, with the north basin about 75 feet deep and the south basin about 19 feet. A cable ferry still crosses between Bemus Point and Stow in summer, and the Chautauqua Institution, founded in 1874, sits on the lake. Long Point State Park has a public beach and a boat launch the state calls the most modern on the lake.
